Coronavirus Restaurant Updates: United States

As COVID-19 continues to spread, many states are taking the necessary steps to prohibit gatherings of people at restaurants.

If you’re wondering if restaurants in your state have been ordered to suspend dine-in service, or have any other restrictions, check out our full state-by-state list below.

Alabama
– Dine-in service permitted starting May 11, certain restrictions must be followed.

Alaska
– Restaurants may resume dine-in service April 24 at 25% capacity.

Arizona
– Dine-in services may resume as of May 11.

Arkansas
– Dine-in services may resume as of May 11.
– Restaurants will be able to operate at a third of their normal capacity and they must limit groups to no larger than 10 people.

California
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service indefinitely.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.
– Beer, wine, pre-mixed drinks or cocktails can be sold for pickup or delivery as long as they have a secure lid or cap and must be sold with food. Alcohol must be transported in the trunk of vehicle, or in another unoccupied area of the vehicle. Learn more.

Colorado
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service indefinitely.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.
– Alcohol can be sold via take-out or delivery. Learn more [page removed].

Connecticut
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service until May 20.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.
– Alcohol can be sold via take-out or delivery. Learn more.

Delaware
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service indefinitely.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.
– Alcohol sales are permitted when accompanied by a food order for take-out or drive-thru. Alcohol can’t cost more than 40% of the total sales transaction, and alcohol may not be included in deliveries.

District of Columbia
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service indefinitely. The stay-at-home order has been extended to June 8.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.
– Wine, beer, and spirits can be included with take-out and delivery orders. Alcohol must be packaged in a sealed container and orders must include at least one food item prepared by the restaurant.

Florida
– Restaurants may offer dine-in service for outdoor seating with six-foot space between tables and indoor seating at 25% capacity.

Georgia
– Restaurants may resume dine-in service, under the following conditions:
– No more than 10 patrons per 500 square feet are allowed inside at once.
– All employees are required to wear masks at all times.
– Employers must screen and evaluate workers who exhibit signs of illness, such as a fever over 100.4 degrees and a cough or shortness of breath.
– Restaurants must post signs that say no one with symptoms of COVID-19 can enter.
– Party size is limited to no more than 6 per table.
– Salad bars and buffets are no longer allowed.
– Restaurants must use pre-rolled silverware.
– Items must be removed from self-service drink, condiment, utensil and tableware stations and have workers provide those items to patrons.
– Patrons must be kept separated while waiting to be seated through floor markings or waiting in cars.
– Workers who show signs of illness can’t come in to work. Employees who have COVID-19 must self-isolate for 7 days and be fever-free and symptom-free for 3 days before coming back to work.
– Employers must train employees on the importance of frequent handwashing, use of hand sanitizers and avoiding touching their faces.
– Playgrounds must stay closed.

Hawaii
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service until May 31.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.

Idaho
– Restaurants may resume dine-in service at 50% capacity starting May 16 once their plans have been submitted for approval by local public health districts. Learn more [page removed].

Illinois
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service until June 26.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.
– Alcohol sales are permitted and do not need to be accompanied by a food order. Unopened packages of beer, wine, spirits can be sold to take-out.

Indiana
– Restaurants can resume dine-in service May 11 at 50% capacity.

Iowa
– Dine-in service may resume on May 15 at 50% capacity.
– No groups of over six people seated together, restaurants must maintain six feet of space between tables, and no buffets or salad bars may be available.

Kansas
– Restaurants can open if they adhere to proper public health guidelines and can maintain at least 6 feet between customers.

Kentucky
– Restaurants can re-open dine-in service on May 22 at 33% capacity, and with outdoor seating.

Louisiana
– Restaurants can offer dine-in service for outdoor seating at 100% capacity.
– Restaurants may offer dine-in service for indoor seating at 25% capacity starting May 15.

Maine
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service until May 31.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.
– Cocktails can be sold to-go. Learn more.

Maryland
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service until Phase 2.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.
– Alcohol take-out and delivery permitted, subject to local liquor laws and regulations.

Massachusetts
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in until at least May 18.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.

Michigan
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service until May 28.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.

Minnesota
– Restaurants will be permitted to re-open dine-in service on June 1, with guidelines for a safe reopening expected to be announced May 20.

Mississippi
– Restaurants can open dine-in service as long as servers wear masks and the restaurant stays at 50% capacity or below.

Missouri
– Restaurants in many counties have been permitted to reopen, check with local guidelines.

Montana
– Restaurants can offer dine-in service. Check local legislation for guidelines.

Nebraska
– Restaurants are permitted to offer indoor dine-in service but must permit no more than 50% of their normal capacity.

Nevada
– Restaurants resumed dine-in service on May 9.
– Now open for dine-in, still encouraging curbside pick-up
– Not allowed to exceed more than 50% of the restaurants occupancy
– All employees must wear masks and patrons are encouraged to do so too
– All tables and booths must be at least 6-feet apart
– Standalone bars will remain closed
– Bars and taverns that serve food can reopen, but bar area must remain closed
– Reservations are highly encouraged
– If waiting to be seated, patrons must wait outside

New Hampshire
– Restaurants can offer dine-in service beginning on May 18, but only with outdoor seating options.
– Tables must be 6 feet apart, and only six people can be seated at a table.
– Servers must have cloth face coverings.

New Jersey
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service indefinitely.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.

New Mexico
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service until at least early June.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.

New York
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service indefinitely.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.
– Alcohol take-out and delivery permitted. Food must be sold with the order, and delivery personnel must have the establishment’s liquor license on hand. Deliveries must be made in a vehicle permitted by the Authority (e.g., a third-party delivery service), or a vehicle owned and operated, or hired and operated by the licensee or its employee.

North Carolina
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service indefinitely and can reopen during phase 2 of the state’s reopening plan.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.

North Dakota
– Restaurants may offer dine-in service.
– Restaurants must maintain social distancing of six feet, inform all employees and customers that they should avoid entering the facility if they have a cough or fever, provide contactless payment systems and hand sanitizer, and encourage wearing face masks.

Ohio
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service until May 29.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.

Oklahoma
– Restaurants may offer dine-in service with “strict social distancing and sanitation protocols.”

Oregon
– Re-opening will happen on a per county basis, check with your local county to see which phase you are currently in.

Pennsylvania
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service indefinitely.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.

Rhode Island
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service indefinitely.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.
– Restaurants can sell up to two bottles of wine or 144 ounces of beer in their original, sealed containers. Alcohol must be sold with an order of food for take-out only, it cannot be delivered.

South Carolina
– Restaurants may offer dine-in service starting May 11 at 50% capacity with tables spaced 6 to 8 feet apart.

South Dakota
– Restaurants have not been ordered to close, however, they have been recommended by the state to offer take-out or limit groups of people to 10 or fewer.

Tennessee
– Many businesses will be allowed to reopen as early as April 27 according to specific guidance.
– Major metropolitan areas may have different dates for reopening. Check local legislation.

Texas
– Restaurants can resume dine-in service at 25% capacity. Learn more [page removed].
– Parties can be no larger than 6 people, and each party must maintain a distance of 6ft apart.

Utah
– The state will allow restaurants to offer dine-in service “with extreme precaution” starting May 1.
– Although in-person dining will be allowed as long as social distancing is maintained and the health of employees is monitored, the state still says takeout and delivery are preferable.
– Carryout, curbside pickup, or delivery permitted.

Vermont
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service indefinitely.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.
– Restaurants may offer alcohol at curbside pickup and delivery, but it must be an unopened container of wine, beer, spirits and “spirit-based product.”
– All alcohol deliveries must happen between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. and restaurants must keep a log of the employee who delivered the alcohol, what was delivered, along with the names and locations of recipients, and signed recipients.

Virginia
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service until June 10.
– Take-out, delivery, and pick-up permitted. There must be less than 10 people in the business at any time.

Washington
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service until phase 2. The state is currently in phase 1.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.

West Virginia
– Restaurants may resume dine-in service for outdoor dining areas. Read full guidelines.
– Restaurants ordered to close indoor dine-in service until May 21. Dine-in service may resume at 50% capacity. Learn more [page removed].

Wisconsin
– Restaurants ordered to close dine-in service until at least May 20.
– Take-out and delivery permitted.
