What Qualities and Skills Make a Good Host/Hostess?
Good hosts and hostesses must exhibit the following traits:
They must be warm and welcoming. Good hosts and hostesses provide positive and memorable experiences for the guests. All employees in today’s workplace also need to be efficient and organized. Multitasking and handling a high-pressure environment are necessary skills for almost any job, including hosting.
Hosts and hostesses also need to be knowledgeable regarding their restaurant, especially the restaurant menu. Customers will arrive with specific dietary needs, such as gluten intolerance, and will ask the host for information about ingredients. The host must be able to answer these types of questions with confidence.
Hosts and hostesses also must be able to manage unexpected situations. All hosts represent their restaurants. The host is the first person a customer sees and is the last to say “goodbye”. Hosts must ensure that all customer issues are addressed quickly and professionally, to ensure a restaurant’s excellent reputation.
How Much Do Hosts Get Paid and Do They Receive Tips?
Hosts generally are paid between $9 and $25 an hour, depending on experience and the restaurant. On occasion, hosts may also earn a portion of the tips granted by customers. Certain restaurants also grant benefits to hosts, such as health insurance or paid time off.
Who Does a Host Report to?
Hosts generally report to the venue manager or owner. If the restaurant is large enough, and security is employed, the host may also report to the restaurant security team.
