Kitchen hands, or kitchen assistants, maintain professional kitchens. From removing garbage to shining silverware, their main task is to keep kitchens clean. Most kitchen assistants have a lot of practice washing dishes.
However, kitchen hands will also assume some basic preparation duties when needed. For example, kitchen hands wash and peel vegetables, which is a time-consuming task. Cooks are usually busy, so a dexterous kitchen assistant able to chop vegetables is a tremendous help.
Another way that kitchen hands may help the cooks is by preparing salads. When the kitchen is busy, cooks simply do not have enough time to make salads. Having a kitchen hand step in to help ensures that salads leave the kitchen quickly, with less work required from cooks.
Everyone in the kitchen, including kitchen hands, must work independently and feel comfortable under pressure. If the kitchen hand is calm, their attitude helps everyone in the kitchen do their job, including the cooks.
Kitchen assistants also prepare ingredients, such as plucking fowl and chopping meat. On occasion, the kitchen hand may even mix simple ingredients together, making dough and basic sauces. The kitchen hand must be able to follow the cook’s directions to do this, which is another skill requirement.
If the kitchen hand does not communicate what they are doing, they are ineffective. The kitchen hand must ensure that everyone is working effectively together and is communicating their actions.
Occasionally, kitchen hands may also garnish food, or even prepare certain menu items under the supervision of a cook. While kitchen assistants are tasked with unpleasant chores, the position teaches an employee how to work in a commercial kitchen, possibly becoming a cook themselves.
Finally, the kitchen hand must be able to work on a team. If the kitchen hand is not a team player, they cannot help anyone, least of all the cooks. A kitchen hand should always keep their role in mind and try to be as supportive as possible.
