To be successful, Beginner baristas should know basic coffee making skills. Brewing methods, such as drip versus French press, should be known by anyone starting a barista career.
Baristas should also know how to grind coffee beans, both using a machine and using a mortar and pestle by hand. Frothing milk is also a skill that seems deceptively simple to learn. However, it’s far too easy to accidentally “over froth” the milk, putting too much air in and ruining the drink. Competent baristas avoid these types of mistakes.
Cleaning and maintaining coffee brewing equipment can also be tricky. Machines disassemble in a specific way for cleaning, and the barista must know exactly how to clean the equipment thoroughly.
Baristas must make certain drinks hundreds of times per day. So, they should know those drinks by heart. Making an espresso, for instance, should be second nature to them, and making lattes should be effortless.
Customer service skills should be ingrained in the competent barista. All baristas have dealt with harried customers. However, successful employees call upon patience to deal with trying situations.
Clear communication will also help, especially when the barista is dealing with teammates, along with customers. Baristas work in teams, and solid teamwork is necessary for success, as teammates assist in multitasking, which is vital for the position. During all this activity, the barista must be able to manage stress. Keeping a cool head in these situations is vital.
Barista training typically lasts about two weeks. While some employers pay for training, others expect the employee to participate in unpaid training. Depending upon the employer, some baristas undergo additional training.
Baristas may also undergo training at specialized institutions and may receive accreditation.
